About the AP Human Geography Exam

AP Human Geography introduces the study of human populations, cultural patterns, political geography, agricultural and rural land use, industrialization, and urban land use patterns. Students learn to use geographic concepts and spatial thinking to analyze real-world patterns and processes.

The exam runs 2 hr 15 min. The multiple-choice section has 60 questions and accounts for approximately 50% of the total score. The Free Response Questions (FRQ) accounts for the remaining 50%.

What Is a Good AP HuG Score?

About 56% of students earn a 3 or higher. Because many students take it in 9th grade as their first AP course, the pass rate is lower than more advanced courses. A 4 or 5 demonstrates strong geographic reasoning and analytical writing skills.

The College Board assigns a label to each score level. A 5 means Extremely Well Qualified, a 4 means Well Qualified, a 3 means Qualified, a 2 means Possibly Qualified, and a 1 means No Recommendation. Most colleges award credit only for scores of 3 or higher, with many competitive schools requiring 4 or 5 for the same credit.

AP Human Geography College Credit Policy

Many universities award 3 credits for scores of 3 to 5, though acceptance is less universal than for history or science AP exams. Some schools offer elective credit only.

Credit policies vary significantly between institutions. Some universities, particularly highly selective ones, use AP scores for placement rather than credit. That means they let you skip ahead in a course sequence but do not reduce your graduation credit requirement. Always verify with your specific school's registrar or AP credit chart before assuming your score earns a particular number of credits.

How Is the AP HuG Score Calculated?

The College Board converts raw scores into a composite score, then maps that composite to a final AP score of 1 to 5. The multiple-choice section is scored by counting correct answers. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so it always pays to attempt every question. Free response answers are scored by trained AP readers using detailed rubrics.

The exact composite-to-AP-score conversion (called the "raw score conversion chart") is set after each exam administration based on the difficulty of that year's exam. The cutoffs used in this calculator are based on historical averages and are intended as estimates. Your actual score will be determined by College Board after scoring is complete.

Frequently Asked Questions

What topics are on the AP Human Geography exam?

The exam covers 7 units: Thinking Geographically, Population and Migration Patterns, Cultural Patterns and Processes, Political Patterns and Processes, Agriculture and Rural Land Use, Cities and Urban Land Use, and Industrial and Economic Development Patterns.

Is AP Human Geography a good first AP course?

AP Human Geography is widely taken in 9th grade as a first AP course. It introduces AP-level thinking without the heavy essay requirements of history courses, making it a reasonable starting point for students new to AP.

Why is the AP Human Geography pass rate lower than other AP social sciences?

The relatively low pass rate (about 56%) is partly because many students take it in 9th grade before developing strong AP-level study habits. Students who approach it seriously tend to do well because the content itself is not inherently harder than other social science APs.

What score do I need for a 5 on AP Human Geography?

A 5 typically requires approximately 68 to 72% or higher on the composite score. Only about 11% of test-takers earn a 5.

Does AP Human Geography count for college credit?

Many but not all universities accept AP Human Geography for credit. Some award 3 social science credits and others offer general elective credit. A few selective universities do not accept it at all, so always check your specific school's policy.
