Frequently Asked Questions
What is a semester GPA?
A semester GPA is your grade point average for a single semester, calculated only from the courses you took that term. It differs from your cumulative GPA, which averages all semesters together.
How does a semester affect my cumulative GPA?
Your new cumulative GPA is the weighted average of all credits you've earned. A strong semester raises it, a weak semester lowers it. The more credits you've already earned, the less a single semester can move your cumulative GPA.
What GPA scale does this calculator use?
This calculator uses the standard 4.0 scale where A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, and F = 0.0. Plus and minus grades fall in between (e.g. A+ = 4.3, B+ = 3.3).
Can I use this for a single semester without a cumulative GPA?
Yes. The cumulative GPA section is optional. Leave those fields empty to just calculate your semester GPA from this term's courses.
How many credits does a typical college course have?
Most college courses are worth 3 credits. Lab courses or intensive courses may be worth 4 credits. Some elective or seminar courses may be 1–2 credits. Check your course syllabus or transcript for exact values.
